U21 Football 2014   02/04/2014

Defeat was the unjust lot of St Michaels in this years City U21 Football Semi Final v Douglas, when we finally succumbed to a 0-8 to 2-13 defeat.

Playing with the elements, St Michaels took the initiative from the start with the O'Keeffe brothers winning the throw in & releasing Daniel Meaney who powered 40 meters before releasing Andrew Murphy for the first of his 4 points from play. Nip & Tuck for the next 10 minutes leaving the score at 0-2 a piece, before St Michaels began to stamp their authority on the game, stretching the lead to 0-4 to 0-2, with David Meaney & Kevin O'Keeffe combining well allowing Andrew Murphy to kick further 2 points.

Disaster then struck after 15 mins when Keith Hegarty having already picking up a scarcely deserved yellow card, was carded again leaving us to play the remaining 45 minutes with only 14 players. Insult was added to injury with Douglas sneaking in for 1-1 while our lads readjusted to our loss.

Credit though, as St Michaels reeled of the next 3 scores to retake then initiative with tactical substitute David O'Sullivan (on for the unfortunate Ian O'Keeffe) creating & being fouled for a number of chances, leaving us leading again by 1, 0-7 to 1-3 as the short whistle approached. Again misfortune struck when we had an unforced turnover in midfield, which led directly to a Douglas major on the stroke of half time, leaving us with a difficult second period to come trailing by 2, 0-7 to 2-3.

Douglas tried hard to force the issue on the re-start, but stout defending kept their forwards at bay, with Eoin Smith & especially Seanie Holland (who kept the much vaunted younger Cadogan scoreless for 60 mins) very much to the fore. Another slaloming run from defence by Daniel Meaney resulted in him bisecting the posts leaving the bare minimum between the teams with 20 left to play.

Despite being down a man, St Michaels continued to force the issue & cooler heads were required when we passed up a number of gilt edged opportunities to level the game & even push ahead.

Eventually, the huge effort began to take its toll, with Douglas now very much in the ascendency for the remaining 10 minutes. Slowly but surely they picked off the scores to push ever so slowly ahead, yet with only 4 minutes on the clock it was still just a 2 score game 0-8 to 2-7 when substitute Andy O'Connell had a goal bound shot cleared off the line by a despairing Douglas defender.

Game set & match, despite emptying the bench to introduce fresh legs & heads, the game was very much now in Douglas hands & they reeled of some good scores as our valiant players sought to delay the inevitable though in the end, we had nothing left in the tank.

Congratulations to a good Douglas team, though many St Michaels supporters left the ground wondering what would have happened had we been able to match up 15 v 15 for the full hour?

Great credit to all 20 players who graced the pitch last night & great hope to see such obvious skill & no little determination on display.
