ST MICHAELS DELIVER AT HOME
St Michaels 1-12 O’Donovan Rossa 1-06
A good win in the end, in late afternoon in Páirc Mhichíl Naofa on Saturday. After an opening day defeat at the same venue , Michaels made up for that today with a solid 6 point win over the lads from West Cork. A good win over Castletownbere in round 2 was followed up today, and it was a game that never really looked like getting away from us. The opening score came about after good work from Lorcán De Burca resulting in a 45 which Mikey O’Connell duly clipped over. Keith Hegarty quickly doubled that lead within a minute. At this stage we were very dominant particularly with Rory Shaughnessy, Emmet Sheehan and Eoin Hickey around the middle. However , despite having a lot of possession, we failed to convert that possession into scores, and a few bad decisions in front of goal kept the Skibb side in touch. A Bucks point from a free, following a James Ryan white flag from play, edged us 4 to 1 ahead , it was a lead we were never going to relinquish. Keith added another, before a fine move upfield resulted in a great Luke Carroll score, moving us to the dressing room 6 points to 1 in front at half time. The second period started somewhat slowly for the home side, and in fact, it was Skibb who really dominated the first 10 mins of that half. They closed the gap to within 2 in that period and it looked like they were getting a foothold around the middle also. James Ryan though, with a fine opportunist goal put us back in the driving seat and quelled the Skibb revival. Luke O’Herlihy , on as a second half sub got the first of his 3 points to move us 6 clear with only a quarter left. Further points also from fellow second half substitute Fionnán Leahy with 2, and another from the hard working Sam Murphy made sure of the points. A late Skibb goal was a consolation for the away team, and when referee Pa O’Driscoll sounded the final whistle , it was a well deserved win for St Michaels. Next up for our Seniors is a trip out to Ballincollig on April the 11th with a teatime throw in.
